UR Web Academy

The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) adopts a comprehensive approach in building a sustainable and quality living environment for the people of Hong Kong through its two core businesses, namely redevelopment and rehabilitation, as well as retrofitting, preservation and revitalisation.

In 2009, the URA released its first education kits for primary and secondary schools, with the aim to provide teachers teaching resources and sample activities to understand urban renewal. The education kits were designed to complement the General Studies of primary schools, Integrated Humanities, Life and Society Curriculum of junior secondary level and Geography of senior secondary level. It covers urban renewal issues in Hong Kong, the role of the URA, as well as the impacts of urban renewal on social, economic, cultural and environmental development in Hong Kong.

Since 2013, the URA has introduced the “UR Web Academy”, an e-portal with interactive learning materials and educational games, to replace the education kits.

The e-portal provides a range of learning activities based on real-life examples, giving students an opportunity to learn more about their communities. The e-portal aims to enable students to:

  • learn about urban decay, the work of  urban renewal, and the role of the URA;

  • understand the importance of urban renewal and explore its impacts by engaging in a wide range of activities;

  • deepen their understanding of and interest in their local communities, thus establishing their relationship with their communities;

  • enhance their understanding of the concept of sustainable development;

  • understand the different point-of-views of various stakeholders in the process of urban renewal;

  • observe and analyse the relationship between urban renewal and sustainable development, from both macro- and micro-perspectives; and

  • care about the future development of their communities, and to participate in urban renewal.
