“Building Tomorrow Today” Drama Competition 2014

To what extent do you know about sustainability? Sustainability has three dimensions: environmental, social and economics. According to the World Commission on Environment and Development, sustainable development is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” What can we do to achieve this?

Energy saving, water saving and waste recycling are nothing new to all of us. It is noteworthy, however, that in Hong Kong, buildings account for the most of carbon emissions. The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) has incorporated sustainability design in doing urban renewal projects as far as practicable. Our environmental policy guidelines cover 6 main environmental provisions including energy efficiency, water conservation, environmentally-friendly building materials, greening, facilities for collection of recyclable waste and reduction of construction waste and environmental nuisance. The URA utilises resources effectively and also provides public open space as well as community facilities in its projects, for the sake of sustainable development of the city.

Through this drama competition, we are inviting secondary school students to express their aspirations and views on sustainable development. For example, how can different segments in society, such as families, schools, community, government, corporations and green groups work together to build a sustainable future for Hong Kong?

The competition will be conducted in two rounds: four scripts will be shortlisted in the first round to enter the finale. All shortlisted teams will be invited to attend a workshop hosted by Hong Kong Repertory Theatre on acting and stage production.

The deadline for script submission is 5 December 2014 (Friday). A panel of judges will select four scripts to enter the finale and to join the workshop in January 2015. The finale will be held on 13 March 2015, and each of the shortlisted teams will be subsidised with HK$2,000 by the URA for the production.
